DASH is happy to share that we have partnered with the City of Vancouver to continue and grow the School Streets Program!
A School Street is a designated car-free block in front of a school that remains open to walking, biking, and rolling during pick-up and drop-off times. School Streets have been shown to increase and promote active travel, reduce congestion and vehicle volumes around schools, create a safer environment for students, and support community connectedness. Last year, School Streets program highlights were:
29% of families reported driving less
32% of families reported walking more
76% of parents reported that they wanted the School Street to continue
The program will be continuing at the 3 pilot schools, Hastings Elementary, Lord Roberts Elementary, and Van Horne Elementary for the 2021-2022 school year. We will also be expanding the School Streets program to new school communities next Spring. If your school community is interested in introducing a School Street, fill out this Interest Form.
Call for Volunteers!
To ensure this program is a success and the School Streets remain as safe as possible, we are recruiting two (2) volunteers to cover each shift at each school.
We are looking for a commitment of one (or more) volunteer shift peer week, ideally for a minimum of one month. With this, we understand that it may be difficult to commit long-term and are happy to receive your support at whatever capacity.
Shifts are 40 minutes in the morning (8:35am-9:15am) or afternoon (2:35pm-3:15pm*) on school days only (Monday – Friday).
*Please note that Lord Roberts afternoon shifts are 1 hour (2:35pm-3:35pm)
