Eagle View Elementary in Port Hardy became a certified healthy school last year as part of DASH’s Healthy School Communities Certification. They are back again this year and already hard at work promoting physical activity and mental well-being at their school. Eagle View Elementary has implemented a lunch hour trekking program, which allows students to move their body, connect with their peers, and engage with nature to promote positive mental health. Within the program, they have also incorporated a walking curriculum to introduce an Indigenous perspective. While students walk, they acknowledge the land, note seasonal changes, and share their personal stories and life experiences. After the initial 6-week program, students were eager and enthusiastic to keep trekking, so the program has been extended!
